The lack of search engine optimisation through poor build, copywriting and back-linking has a huge impact on the environment: according to Google the perfect one-hit search alone produces 0.2g of CO2; a typical, poorly optimised site with its inherent challenges for findability magnifies this drain on local processing and Google servers resources terrifyingly up to 1g-10g. So, for all those SEO doubters out there, even if you don’t believe it financially beneficial to make sure your products & services are as findable as possible, at least try to make them so as part of your company environmental policy.

Out means Off
We switch off all non-essential electrical equipment at the close of our working day. Ensuring laptops, lighting &c. are OFF and not in hibernation mode can mean saving a bus full of carbon dioxide per employee per year. Imagine if that big cloud of CO2 was coloured and followed you to remind you as an individual what you were unnecessarily eeeking out.

Laptops
We solely use laptops. This means we don’t need two separate computers – one for the office, the other to visit clients and so cutting down on CO2 production.

Hosting
Over the past year we have migrated each of our clients whose websites needed redesigning for SEO onto our green server hosted by Nublue, along with any completely new web projects. Nublue reside in an eco-business centre: the building is entirely self-heating because it absorbs heat from the outside world. All non-essential electrical equipment is turned off at night and energy-saving appliances are used throughout their operation.

Glass-Only-Elevenses
The milk for our elevenses [et al] is delivered by a milkman; not only does this keep a local person employed, but as the bottles are recycled it cuts out all that recycling of plastic bottles; to wash and reuse a milk bottle is safer on the environment.

Software
Wherever possible we download software to cut out the need of a ‘post’ journey, and the environmental impact of un-biodegradable single-purpose CDs used to install software.

Wireless Mice & Keyboards
We only use rechargeable batteries to power these.

Non-Smokers
Our staff comprise only non-smokers.

Paperless Billing
We send all our invoices only electronically and use a secure online accounts package that does not require to be installed by CD. We request all invoices & bills to be sent to us electronically and have opted in to all utility and banking options of paperless accounts.

Gas & Electricity
We use the green tariff for utilities, this means that for every unit of electricity or gas that is used by webSEOlive it is matched by our supplier who purchase a unit generated from renewable technologies. It is actually tragic that in affect little SMEs have to pay for power conglomerates to do this but if it helps and guarantees a future we are more than glad.

Public Transport and VoiP Software
We use either bikes or public transport wherever possible to go to meetings. For our clients based abroad in Italy & Jamaica we make sure that we use programmes like VoiP such as Skype and virtual conferencing solutions like GoToMyPC & GoToMeeting in order to cut down on the need to get on a plane for training and presentations.

Location
We are based in London’s greenest borough, Hackney, it has the lowest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions anywhere in the capital, according to Government figures and they recycle 25% of rubbish, which means we can separate all our junk (paper & card, tins, glass, plastic, food waste) that is generated in a working week.

Of course we can all always do more, at webSEOlive that means an upgrade to our laptops over the coming year to ensure that they are less power hungry.
